This month we have visited every business in the town centre in the last month to hand out questionnaires about initiatives we would like to implement in the town centre to feed into our interactive map and town centre offer. Initiatives include: Dog friendliness, refill water scheme, courtesy toilet schemes, adopting a street, and shopwatch. We have had a great response. We also hosted our first series of drop-in sessions for businesses to come and tell us what they want to see happen in Brighouse. We have a number of boards up in the BID office where people can put forward their ideas for things such as:

  • What events people want to see happen in the town and feedback about existing markets
  • Transport – to help feed ideas into the transport strategy.
  • Workshops – what workshops businesses might find useful to help them promote their businesses better.
  • Market – what people want to see happen in the market space as we develop ideas for it.
  • The ‘Stronger Towns’ fund – what people would like to see the £25million to be spent on (although we don’t have the criteria as yet)
  • Masterplan – consultants are about to be appointed by the council to undertake a Master Planning exercise. This will look at many competing factors to help plan a better town centre, from trees, open spaces, looking at the night time economy suggestions for pedestrianisation, transport, redeveloping the market etc… Neighbouring towns have successfully secured funding from other sources to implement the plan purely as they have a Masterplan. We are excited that Brighouse will receive the same attention. It is a permanent item featured on the town board agenda. BID represent the businesses on our town board, so please do let us know any thoughts you have. We believe that part of BIDs job is to help create the vision for our town and then find a way to enable that vision.

Markets & Events

Artisan Markets

BID will be hosting the final Artisan market of the year in October. As you know they were much more frequent than in previous years. We have undertaken a mini survey with businesses to find out whether you felt they were a positive addition to the town or if you would prefer less frequent but more focused in terms of themes. One of the BID’s objectives   is to drive footfall into the town and represent all-of-our levy payers. As the strategy develops we will keep you posted and welcome your suggestions of events you would like to see.

Halloween Trail

We have also organised the annual Brighouse Halloween trail of which 34 of our levy payers have kindly agreed to participate. We have an extra long anagram this year for the children to solve. We are

expecting around 500 children to take part in the event, which will bring a lot of extra footfall into our town. We would also like to thank Brearleys Solicitors for their generous contribution of a family cinema ticket. The trail sheets are free, and can be collected from the Pot Spot, the Garden Shed and Just Books or you can download here. The children have the chance to enter a free prize draw. It will be printed on the sheet that each child dressed in a Halloween outfit presenting their trail sheet in the participating businesses will receive a treat). The children will collect letters from each of the businesses and complete the sheet.

craft, gift, food and drink stalls already booked to have stalls at our November spectacular, we are hosting on the 23rd/24th November. As you know this is the eighth year and we also have a programme of performers including musicians, school choirs, magicians, street theatre, animals and Morris dancers. We are also very excited to announce that Magic Rock Brewing have agreed to be our main stage sponsor at the event. They will also be bringing their trailer

and selling their extremely tasty beer on both days.

Workshops

We will be announcing our programme of business support workshops in the new year. Workshops will include photography, social media beginners, intermediate and advanced for both businesses who sell to consumers and businesses who sell to other businesses (including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and social-media-training-workshopsGoogle My Business) GDPR, and Cyber Security how to use Mailchimp, health and safety, first aid, waste management. If you would be interested in any of these events, please email info@brighousebid.co.uk  Workshops will be free for levy payers otherwise there will be a ticket price dependent upon the length and intensity of the workshop. We will be publishing the workshops on Eventbrite. In the meantime, we will be hosting a marketing surgery every Wednesday morning 10am-12pm where levy payers are welcome to pop in an ask any marketing related questions you may have.

Steering Groups

It was agreed at the last BID members and directors meeting that we would develop a number of volunteer steering groups, led by BID to help us deliver our vision for Brighouse. We have an ambitious delivery plan and believe we are stronger and will achieve more if we work together.

  1. Safe and secure – we are looking at initiatives to include town centre connectivity, shopwatch scheme and crime reduction
  2. Destination town – this will include environmental action to help enable businesses and our events to become carbon neutral and shape our envinronmental policy to ensure all our future plans for Brighouse have sustainable design at their heart. The purpose of this group is to attract visitors and businesses to Brighouse

  3. Lively and welcoming town – the main focus of this group will be to help us deliver the events and promote our forthcoming loyalty app/schemes.

We have already had a lot of interest in the concept and will use the steering groups to shape the strategy

Grants

We have applied for a number of small grants to deliver some interesting initiatives into Brighouse.

  • Greggs Foundation have accepted an application to look at undertaking a town centre audit of disability friendliness.
  • We are about to apply to the Proceeds of Crime fund. We propose to offer a series of cyber security workshops to help businesses keep themselves secure.

  • We have applied to the Town Board for a small community grant of £500 towards the delivery of the Christmas market. This will help to fund the face painting, magician and promotional material which will bring extra footfall into the town.

Shopwatch 

The overwhelming response from businesses is that they would welcome a Shop Watch scheme in the town centre. We have been investigating a number of options and are now working closely with other local BIDs to look at a holistic solution to help us meet our objective of creating a safe and secure town.

Welcome To The Brighouse BID Blog!

Firstly, let us introduce ourselves, as your BID Marketing Managers!

Meet your Brighouse BID Marketing Managers!

We are both local girls who are really passionate about making Brighouse a vibrant welcoming, safe, secure and destination town. We are job sharing the Brighouse BID job and bring a real complimentary mix of skills that spans across business support, digital marketing, raising finance and running events. 

Here’s a little intro to us:

My name is Michelle Veasey. As well as being a part-time BID Manager I have a small digital marketing agency. I specialise in helping businesses grow their businesses using digital channels to generate leads. My particular areas of interest are LinkedIn, Facebook advertising and building sales funnels. I’m looking forward to running workshops in our new office to help our BID levy payers get the most out of their online presence. I’m also about to be a levy payer as well, as my husband and I are about to open The Crafty Fox craft bar on Commercial Street as well as being a gigging musician often singing and playing the guitar in and around Brighouse. 

I’m Lauren Barber, I am really pleased to be appointed as Marketing Manager for Brighouse. I have lived in the town for most of my life and I have so many ideas that I am excited to implement to help Brighouse to thrive. I have previously worked at Marketing Halifax, the Town Centre Forum, there I worked to promote Halifax and its town centre environment to fulfil its potential as a competitive destination in which to work, visit and live. As part of my role at Marketing Halifax, I worked on campaigning for a YES vote for Halifax BID, which was successfully voted in as the first BID in Calderdale. I also worked at Overgate Hospice for 8 years in the fundraising team. Responsible for organising the events and campaigns as well as raising awareness of the Hospice at local and national levels. 

BID Activities: 

We know that you have been waiting to hear from the BID for a while as it was officially set up in April, however, we were appointed from the first of June, and since then we have hit the ground running, taking over from the BBI. 

This has included setting up the BID infrastructure from scratch. Some of the big activities so far have been: 

  • Installing a new computer system so we can be as efficient as possible in our BID Management, as well as remaining GDPR compliant. 
  • Taking over the running of the events, which has been three to-date (including the mammoth Brighouse 1940s weekend. 
  • Acquiring our new home, which will be the old Marsden’s Jewellers on Bradford Road. We are hoping to move into very soon, see below for more details of our plans for the office. 
  • Setting up the communications channels and overall strategy for what we want to achieve from the next five years of running the Brighouse BID.

Here is what we have been up to in our first couple of months…

First and foremost our commitment is to supporting our levy payers to build a vibrant, safe, secure and welcoming town for many years to come. This will help to grow the local economy through events, by seeking funding and supporting Brighouse businesses with their marketing. Create a great place that people want to visit and that you and your staff can enjoy. 

We have been working on the following:

Office Space – We are not quite moved in yet, but we are looking forward to welcoming you to drop-in sessions where you can tell us what you want from being part of the Brighouse BID, as well as business and marketing training workshops delivered by us to help you grow your business. Look out for those and book your free place as part your BID levy. The office is the old jewellers at 17 Bradford Road, Brighouse HD6 1RW.

Computer System – We have been working hard to implement a BID management system which will help us achieve our objectives as well as grow and manage the events offering. We will be using the system to build a reporting mechanism so you will have real-time access to see what we are achieving for Brighouse. 

 

Meeting Levy Payers – We have already been out and about speaking to some of our Levy payers to find out what help and support they need. This has included some LinkedIn training to help businesses get the most out of the opportunity that social media presents to business growth. We have also started lobbying the council for support to those businesses that have suffered from flooding. We will endeavour to meet as many of you as we can. Delivering existing events – To date, we have been involved in the delivery of the 1940s weekend, and two Artisan Markets, with more planned for the rest of the year. We are hoping to expand and grow the events over the next few years and welcome ideas for what you would like to see in Brighouse. Ideas to date have been a Halloween Walk for children and a Music and Beer Festival.

Place Branding & Communications Plan – In order to achieve one of our objectives to make Brighouse a destination town we are exploring ideas to develop our own identity which will include place branding. We will be speaking to many stakeholders to understand what that means for Brighouse and we will be consulting you to what you would like to see. We are also currently redesigning our website (www.brighousebid.co.uk) which we will be updating regularly and will be the hub for all of our communications. We are always looking for content to share and we are committed to helping you to grow your business. There will be a facility for you to submit any news you have that you would like to promote, or jobs you would like to recruit for. We will be happy to share these across our channels.
